Overview/Audience
This provides basic information about substance abuse prevention, with areas of emphasis in evidence-based environmental strategies and overcoming barriers to implementing environmental strategies. The material also provides information specifically targeted for substance abuse prevention professionals and other professionals in related fields who need an introduction to environmental prevention strategies.

Goal
Increase the level of knowledge about environmental prevention strategies among a broad audience of individuals who influence decisions regarding prevention planning and practices, including prevention practitioners, policymakers, and State and local administrators.

Objectives
1. Inform about the powerful potential of employing environmental strategies as part of a comprehensive effort to reduce alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drug use among children and youth.
2. Identify evidence-based environmental practices for substance abuse prevention.

Overview/Audience

The text we have chosen, A Framework for Understanding Poverty (Payne, 1996), was selected for its application to the work of substance abuse prevention specialists, particularly those working in schools (e.g., prevention, education, and counseling). Areas of emphasis include definitions and resources, the role of language and story, hidden rules among classes, characteristics of generational poverty, role models and emotional resources, support systems, discipline, instruction and improving achievement, and creating relationships.

Target Audience
Designed for participants who are motivated to gain knowledge about approaching, understanding, and working with students, adults, and organizations representing the socioeconomic spectrum of poverty, middle class, and wealth. The material is written for the beginner to advanced professional in prevention, education, and related fields.

Goals
To increase the level of knowledge and understanding of the ability of economics to shape thinking and behavior. To obtain new tools which can guide preventionists and educators in creating and developing relationships that support effective cross-class communication and collaboration.

Objectives (6 hours; when choosing Option A only)
1. Learn and understand the different socioeconomic hidden rules which govern thinking and behavior.
2. Learn guidelines on how to effectively communicate with individuals and systems operating from different perspectives.
3. Learn about tools which support cross-class communication and movement and increase the effectiveness of prevention policies, programs, and services.

Additional Objectives (10 hours; when choosing Option B*)
Upon completion of Option B, participants will be able to (in addition to Option A objectives):

4. Apply the information and skills learned to a particular group or individual with whom you work.
5. Demonstrate how applying the knowledge and skills learned will help you achieve a desired outcome related to your work.

3. Identify key aspects of substance abuse theory.
4. Recognize the components of risk and protective factor theory.
5. Understand the basics of each step of prevention program planning.
6. Identify pharmacological information about drugs and models of addiction.
7. Define cultural competency in a prevention context.
8. Develop a framework for working with the community in the context of cultural competency.
9. Identify the Code of Ethics created by NAPPA.
10. Identify prevention strategies that focus on human emotional, social, and/or moral development.
11. Understand the significant influence of media in prevention.
12. Understand the relationship between substance abuse and other social problems.
13. Identify evidence-based practices for substance abuse prevention.
14. Explore the relationship between evidence-based prevention findings and non-evidence-based prevention practices.
15. Learn and explain what does and does not work in prevention practices and why.
16. Understand the purposes of evaluation.
17. Understand the key components of evaluation.
18. Develop logic models using evaluation data.
19. Effectively communicate with the community and government representatives.
20. Describe skills important in facilitation.
21. Organize a grant writing process.
22. Create a letter of proposal to obtain funding from a funding agency or sponsor.
