Ruben Baler received his Ph.D. in Microbiology and Cell and Molecular Biology from the University of Miami, FL in 1993. He then moved to the National Institutes of Health, and after 5 years of postdoctoral research on Molecular Chronobiology, he moved to the National Institute of Mental Health, where he became Principal Investigator of the Unit on Temporal Gene Expression, conducting basic research on the molecular basis of circadian gene expression in vertebrates. In October 2004 he joined the Science Policy Branch in the Office of Science Policy and Communications at the National Institute on Drug Abuse as a Health Scientist. His early publications deal with the regulation of gene expression in space and time. More recently, his articles have been focused on the neurobiology of drug abuse and addiction.
