Clinical Supervision (30 person max - first come, first serve)
Attendees in this track only attend Clinical Supervision for 2 days, but will be able to attend the closing luncheon and final keynote. This workshop ends before lunch on the final day of the conference. Practitioners have called supervision of clinical personnel “meta-therapy.” Effective
clinical supervisors are well-trained in psychotherapy, management, and supervision
techniques specific to counselors. Many individuals in the counseling field are promoted to clinical supervision with little formal training in clinical supervision. This track will provide an overview of clinical supervision theories and skills. Additionally, clinical
supervision of addiction counselors will be highlighted. This track provides an excellent review for “seasoned” clinical supervisors as well as providing neophyte clinical
supervisors with a solid foundation.
SAPST (30 person max - first come, first serve)
Attendees in this track attend SAPST for most of the conference; however, will be able to attend the final keynote, Jeff Jordan, and closing luncheon. This track ends on May 20, 2009 at 5pm. This three-day workshop is intended to introduce prevention professionals to the
fundamentals of prevention research and application. The workshop provides an overview of the history of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug prevention strategies; prevention
research; prevention program planning; cultural competency and ethics; human
development; the media; and evaluation.
Prevention Ethics (30 person max - first come, first serve)
Attendees in this track only attend Ethics for six (6) workshops of the conference, but will be able to attend Keynotes/Plenary sessions, two general workshop sessions of their choice, and the final day of events. This workshop ends on May 19, and participants will be able to particpate in all of Day 3 events. As the prevention field becomes more established, ethical codes that specifically relate to the knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of prevention workers are becoming standardized. Prevention specialists need to be aware of ethical codes that relate to working with a
variety of specialized populations (e.g., children, adolescents, college students, families, and seniors). Ethical dilemmas will be presented and participants will have the
opportunity to recommend and discuss potential solutions. This three-day track will focus on ethical codes that apply directly to professionals delivering prevention services, but will not focus on ethical codes relating to substance abuse treatment. Attendees will receive 6 hours of Prevention Ethics by attending this track. A letter will be provided stating attendees earned 6 hours of Prevention Ethics training. You must attend all 7 workshops of Prevention Ethics to receive this letter to submit with certificate.
Motivational Interviewing (30 person max-CLOSED track)
The Motivational Interviewing (MI) track being offered at the 2009 Spring Academy begins with a five week online pre-requisite course, that MUST be completed before moving on to the face-to-face MI workshop. Deadline to register for the online course is March 20, 2009 and the course runs from April 6 - May 11, 2009. Upon completion of the online course, participants will be registered for the MI track at the Spring Academy in May. Robert Rhode, Ph.D. will facilitate a three-day workshop on intermediate to advanced motivational interviewing. For those workshop participants in supervisory positions wanting to continue their training, a motivational interviewing course for Clinical Supervisors (MIA: STEP) will be offered later in the year, date to be determined, free of charge. Registrants will receive a total of 30 continuing educational hours upon completion of the online course and the Spring Academy workshop. Registration fee for the five week online course and the MI track at the 2009 Spring Academy is $350. Registration is limited to the first 30 registrants.
